CONTINGENT CITY
Fall 2024
Professor Frances Hsu
CONTINGENT CITY re-imagines the historic USPS warehouse in Downtown Memphis, transforming the 262,000 sq ft structure into a vibrant mixed-use community hub. Designed to enrich the Vance Neighborhood, it includes a grocery store with a farmers market, clinic, restaurant, communal garden, library, play spaces, and a multi-purpose event area. Advanced features, like mechanized workshops and solar-tracking roof panels, enhance functionality and sustainability. A native garden links to the greenway, fostering outdoor connection, while the modular column-beam system preserves the building’s integrity, blending utility, culture, and sustainable design.
